Look-out: Sossna gets the overview at Sachsenmilch

Today I would like to tell you about a very special press visit I went on. Travel to and from the location was a bit difficult, but it was well worth it. “Molke 5” is the latest extension to the whey-processing operations of Sachsenmilch in Leppersdorf, near Dresden. Sachsenmilch is part of the Theo Müller group of companies.

Whey is big business these days, cheese in this context is almost a by-product. I was made aware of this again during my visit to Leppersdorf, because the milk & whey tycoon Theo Müller is certainly not going to invest over 200 million euros in whey processing unless it brings in a profit.

Even before my visit I knew I would be seeing another high-care production, where everything is subject to the most rigorous hygiene standards. But just how far the Leppersdorfers have gone with this surprised even me. On the other hand it was to be expected, because after all what they are dealing with are ingredients for baby food. And with that kind of sensitive consumer, it does no harm at all to err on the side of caution in production.

The highlight of the tour for me was, however, not the factory itself, but its roof, where they have installed a viewing platform. Every time Theo Müller comes to Leppersdorf, he can climb up here and enjoy the view over what is possibly the biggest, certainly the most complex dairy plant in the world. At a lofty 40 meters above the ground, I understood what he must feel. This was a grandiose outlook for all those who can appreciate the beauty of industrial facilities.
