In the Cafeteria

My career as a traveling reporter and business tourist brings me to some far-flung locations and sometimes even to the very centers of power. Be it audiences with local leaders from the dairy industry or ministers in the German Chancellor’s bungalow in Bonn (when Bonn was still the seat of government) one might say I’ve been everywhere. However, I have not yet succeeded in gaining access to the German Parliament.
In fact, even my attendance of the Association of the German Dairy Industry’s annual conference – which took place in Berlin in October – didn’t get me any closer.
I did at least manage to get into the Parliamentary cafeteria, however, where the evening function was being held. Incidentally, the establishment does not deserve the title ‘cafeteria’ in any way, as it is more of a restaurant run like a well-oiled machine. The best deserve the best, so, in this spirit, those who make sacrifices to campaign on our behalf in Parliament deserve a little something special in terms of catering. Without this they wouldn’t be able to manage their workload and might, God forbid, end up nothing but skin and bone from all the stresses and strains of their work.
I was duly satisfied with the quality of the food and drink on offer in the cafeteria at the German Parliament and returned home safe in the knowledge that service and commitment are still valued qualities in this country of ours, so long, that is, as one is involved in politics.
